Parc National des Volcan is located in the North and protects Rwandan portion of the Virunga mountains – a Trans-frontier Conservation Area that includes protected areas in Uganda and the DRC and from a complex of mostly dominant volcanoes. It includes Rwanda’s highest point, mount kArisimbi(4,507m) and the two active volcanoes, Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamuragira.
This national park is notably celebrated as the World’s last remaining mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. There are several other tourism sites and opportunities I the park and surrounding areas; climbing mount Bisoke’s to experience the beautiful crater lake , hiking to the summit of the Karisimbi mountains (5th Largest mountain of Africa), visit the often neglected twin lakes Busera and Ruhondo and the nearby Rugezi swamp for birding( over 100 bird species). Not to be missed are the community based tourism experiences on offer and include; visiting local villages, agri-production projects, ethno botany tours, fishing with the local fishermen using traditional methods among others.
